Fall 2024
Vol. 1, No. 1
It was the second week of December and sure, it rarely gets very cold out here in LaLa Land, but lately the weather had been doing crazy unpredictable things everywhere and some seriously icy Arctic winds had unexpectedly rolled in off the Pacific. Lots of homeless people were looking for food and shelter that night wherever they could find it. I drove up to the McDonald’s near midnight and was surprised to see it mobbed. The crowd was mostly the usual raggedy-Anns and Charlies with their shopping carts, but also families with kids and wrinkly-faced seniors. There was a strange kind of tension in the air, a kind of fervor, like at those religious tent revivals in the old Midwest. Everyone was bundled up in whatever they had, breath puffs steaming around their faces. I felt distinctly out of place in my expensive leather jacket and corduroys. People were filing in in a somewhat organized way through the front door and filing out the side door with bags of food. I hung back and peered in through the glass front and caught sight of Truword handing out bags and smiling, dispensing what seemed words of comfort to each person. As I would gradually learn dozens and dozens of Quarter Pounders, Egg McMuffins, Bacon Egg and Cheese Biscuits, Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddles, McCrispys, Spicy Deluxe McCrispys, McNuggets, McChickens along with Caramel Cappuccinos, Mocha Lattes, French Vanilla Coffee, McFlurrys with Oreo Cookies and Candies, Hot Fudge Sundaes, Strawberry Shakes, Cokes, and Sprites were coming from the kitchen. This was the under-staffed after-hours kitchen which had already closed at ten. The grills were no longer in operation. The wide-eyed and confused red-and-yellow uniformed workers behind the counter kept going to the back and retrieving more and more bags. The franchise manager sat at one of the tables looking stunned. I heard whispers from the crowd around me, hushed talk about a miracle. There was talk of Jesus with the loaves and fishes in the New Testament. This was the miracle of the Double Cheeseburger, the Fanta Orange and Frozen Coca-Cola classic, the Sausage Burritos and Hash Browns and World-Famous Fries.
